APT: Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Raspberry Pi OS

Add the Bernie repository and its key, then install: updates then come with your regular apt upgrades.

curl -fsSL https://beber666.github.io/bernie-releases/bernie.gpg | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/bernie.gpg > /dev/null
echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/bernie.gpg] https://beber666.github.io/bernie-releases stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/bernie.list
sudo apt update && sudo apt install bernie

Flatpak: any distribution

A single command; updates come with flatpak update or your software center.

flatpak install --user https://beber666.github.io/bernie-releases/flatpak/bernie.flatpakref

Files and USB lasers

Prefer a file? The latest release has the .deb packages, the AppImage and the .flatpak file. For a laser connected over USB, your account must be in the dialout group: run sudo usermod -aG dialout $USER, then log out and back in.

Which platform for what?

A single engine, written in Rust: the drawing, the layers, the preview, the pre-flight check and the G-code are identical everywhere. Only the connections to the laser change.

Bernie's start-up tour: “Welcome to Bernie”, before it finds your laser.

First launch

Two minutes, and your laser is ready.

  1. Choose your type of laser Diode, CO2, fiber — or the virtual laser if you don’t have one yet.
  2. Bernie finds the machine A search over USB and on the network, or a pick from the catalog.
  3. Work area, origin, materials Everything is pre-filled and the material library is linked — then a first project is waiting for you.

Free doesn’t mean worthless.

If Bernie saves you time — or boards — a tip helps keep it alive.
